Where should I have my session?
We have two general options for the location of your shoot; in your home or at an outdoor location. Both of these options are beautiful and you should make the choice based on what you’re hoping to get out of your images. Are you looking for a more carefree, hanging out at home with your family feel? Or perhaps spending time at the beach or out on a farm is your family’s favorite past time? Take some time to think about what you’re hoping to get out of these images before choosing your location and read below for more insight into indoor and outdoor locations.
*Please note, I do not have a studio. If you’d prefer a studio session, I would love to recommend you to another wonderful photographer who may be better suited to your style.
At Home
In home sessions are comfy and carefree, think kids jumping on the bed, peeping through windows and cuddling up in bed. An in-home session often allows children to relax more and gives space for the family pet to be included as well!
I recommend in-home sessions for newborns, babies and really young kids as they give your access to snacks and changes of clothes for both you and them (often pretty important with young babies).
The best time of day for an indoor shoot is morning to midday, before naps get missed, messes are made and the day generally going off the rails.
Outdoor
I love outdoor sessions purely for the opportunity to take advantage of the most beautiful lighting. I truly believe in the transformational power of beautiful sunlight. My outdoor sessions are always conducted in the ‘Golden’ hour just before or after sunset/sunrise. I understand that having your children up early for sunrise, or having them stay up late for sunset, may affect their mood and sleep schedule slightly, but it has always been worth it.
I have many favourite locations in parks and beaches around Melbourne, we can discuss a variety of options that match your vision for your session.
Just do you
My greatest joy is to fade into the background and observe genuine connection and natural interaction. I will not be focusing on the “look-at-the-camera-and-say-cheese” types of images during our shoot. I typically capture a few of these for you, but truth be told, you’ll only have to look directly into the camera if prompted to do so!
I will move you into pretty light, ask you to walk hand-in-hand, or suggest you all tickle the littlest member of your family, even play ring around the rosy! I get silly with your kiddos during the shoot and will encourage them to fully unleash their unique personality. I love when families take over after a prompt and capturing these moments of natural connection is my jam.
What I ask from you is that you really allow yourself to relax and just be yourself. I’m not here to make judgements; I’m here to capture you at your most honest self. That’s the version of you your loved ones know and that we are looking to preserve in our session.
Don’t be afraid to love on your family as if no one else was there. I want you to laugh wildly, snuggle tightly, slide your fingers affectionately through their hair, and to keep connecting with your people each and every moment.
Allow yourself to be in the moment as much as possible and enjoy the experience of being with your family.
